The birth of the Hermitage museum is linked with the name of Catherine the Great. In 1764 she purchased a collection of paintings from a Prussian merchant Gotskovsky: more than 200 works of art, created by Dutch and Flemish masters. After Catherine II founded the museum, one purchase followed another, and her clever diplomacy helped her to gather pieces of art and raise the authority of Russia.
Today works by Leonardo da Vinci, Titian, Rembrandt, Velasquez, Raphael, van Gogh, Monet and other great masters are all exhibited in the Hermitage. During the tour to the Hermitage you’ll also see items from Egypt, Ancient Greece, and Rome, and many, many more wonders. Jewelry and gold collection are displayed in the Gold and the Diamond Rooms.
